Filing Systems

January 9th, 2009 · No Comments

Having spent a bit of time at my parents house the other day I was surprised to discover that my dad had quite a bit of filing that he had not completed.  This was quite unlike the man I always remember being totally sorted.

Mum has sent me an explanation that  I just wanted to share:

Dear Mike,

Did I hear you ask Dad what happened to his filing system?

I thought I should mention the system currently used in this Mather residence –
It is the ‘H’ (Heap) system
Sometimes referred to as the double ‘H’ system ‘HirwH‘ (Hope I Remember Which Heap)

It has three distinct advantages -

1. It means that rarely can anyone else find a document belonging to the Owner of the Heap.

2. It trains the Owner’s memory and provides a challenge to break their previous record in locating any given item.

3. It trains well meaning persons of the Tidy Mind Fraternity to resist the temptation to dislodge another’s Heap.

Do feel free to inspect my secondary filing system which is in place when I run out of space in my filing cabinet  – it is the B&B  system (Box & Basket) – sometimes ‘Triple B’ system, if I run out of Boxes and Baskets and have to resort to Bags.

I am interested in hearing of other ‘Overflow’ systems in use and meanwhile hope I shall be spared enough days to tidy up before my Executors have to do the job for me.

Your ever loving Mum
