An English friend of mine who’s son went on to work in France for 3 months in the ski season has upon his return been told he has to take a citizens test to establish if he is entitled to live in England.

WHAT!?

Why make existing British Citizens take this test?

I fail to understand why you would need to establish if a person who has lived their whole life in the UK and who’s parents, grandparents and previous generations have all been British citizens is allowed to live in the UK….  Time will tell..
